It is not for
journalists to make predictions. Even so, I had made one, and instead of
hedging it with ifs and buts as the clever ones do, I had stuck my neck out. “I
have just returned from the BJP session in Bombay,” I wrote in a syndicated
column, “with one certainty: Atal Behari Vajpayee will, sooner or later, become
the country’s Prime Minister. I am not saying he may, I am saying he will.
Mine is not a prediction based on the stars, for I am no astrologer. It’s a
prediction based on a close hard look at the man and his party. Vajpayee leads
a party of the future. Both have blossomed.”
