The Special Protection Group or SPG is facing an acute shortage of senior officers. This elite force is responsible for the protection of Prime Minister, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and other Ex Prime Ministers in India. They are tough, straight and no-nonsense cops. The SPG recruits officers and cops from all streams of the forces like military, frontal police organisations but it doesn’t absorb them. All cops and officers join the SPG on deputation basis and go back to their parent organisation when the term is over. Even after selecting the best officers, it takes time to train them before final induction. But given the acute shortage, we learn that the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has been forced to overlook its own order.
