Swaraj-Jaitley poll debacle

Swaraj-Jaitley poll debacle
duo lets party down
THE recent Assembly elections have thrown into relief a piquant situation in the BJP. It is well known that Sushma Swaraj, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, and Arun Jaitley, her counterpart in the Rajya Sabha, are both Prime Ministerial candidates. For the elections, Jaitley was in charge of Assam and West Bengal, while Swaraj was in charge of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Both regions registered a dismal performance by the BJP. The party could have managed a better show in Assam but the political management under Jaitley floundered miserably.
Now, their supporters are trying to shrug it off by saying the BJP had nothing to begin with in these States so the post-results hoopla is uncalled-for. Yet, a better show is surely expected from the party’s Prime Ministerial candidates. Unsurprisingly, they are both conspicuously silent on the issue.
