Chavan faux pas
 ditches janata at darbar
IT seems Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan is yet to familiarize himself with Maharashtra politics. He recently walked out of a janata darbar at which a large crowd had been encouraged to gather. The idea was MPCC president Manikrao Thakare’s, intended to bolster Chavan’s image. Thakare decided to restart the practice of janata darbar of Congress Ministers at the party’s Gandhi Bhavan office in Nariman Point. The relaunch would begin with the CM himself.
Though Chavan has been emphasizing e-governance and decentralizing the decision-making process to the district and taluka levels, hordes of people from all corners of Maharashtra still come every week to Mantralaya. The crowd is larger on the days of the weekly Cabinet meeting because some leaders bring along an entourage just to impress their followers back in their constituency.
But Chavan, unused to being mobbed by crowds, simply walked out of the venue. Having travelled long distances and waited for hours to seek redressal of their grievances, one delegation of handicapped people then staged a dharna inside the Gandhi Bhavan office.
